7 Early Signs You Have A Pest Problem In Your Melbourne Home

4 August 2026 · 6 min read

By the time someone calls about a pest problem, it has usually been going on for a while. Not because people ignore it, but because the early signs are easy to explain away. A bit of dirt in the corner of the pantry. A noise in the roof that could be the wind. A cobweb you keep meaning to knock down.

Picking it up early usually means a smaller, simpler job. Here is what to keep an eye out for around a Melbourne home.

1. Droppings in the same spots

Rodent droppings are small, dark and often turn up along skirting boards, in the back of cupboards, in the garage or under the kitchen sink. Cockroach droppings look more like ground pepper or coffee grounds and collect in corners, behind the fridge and inside cupboard hinges. If you clean an area and the droppings return within a few days, the activity is current, not historical.

2. Scratching or scurrying at night

Noise in the roof or wall cavity after dark is one of the most common calls. Rodents are most active in the evening and early morning, so a repeating pattern at roughly the same time each night is a strong indicator. A one-off thump is usually something else — a repeating scratch or a run across the ceiling is worth acting on.

3. Chewed packaging or gnaw marks

Cardboard boxes with corners eaten away, pasta packets with small holes, chew marks on timber, or shredded paper and insulation used as nesting material. Rodents need to gnaw constantly, so damage tends to show up in the pantry, garage and storage areas first.

4. Ant trails that keep coming back

A single ant is nothing. A trail is a signal — ants follow chemical trails to a food source, so once one is established the rest follow. Wiping the trail away removes the scent for a while, but if the nest is still active they will re-establish it within days. Trails along window frames, benches and the base of exterior walls are the usual spots.

5. Live insects during daylight

Cockroaches are nocturnal. Seeing one in the middle of the day generally means the harbourage areas are crowded, which suggests a larger population than what you are actually seeing. The same logic applies to seeing several in one evening.

6. Webbing around the eaves and windows

Spider webbing under eaves, around window frames, in the garage and along fence lines builds up quickly through the warmer months. Beyond the webs themselves, heavy spider activity usually means there is plenty of insect activity around the property for them to feed on.

7. Unexplained bites or restless nights

Small bites appearing overnight, often in a line or cluster, can point to fleas or bed bugs. Check bed seams, mattress edges and bed frames for small dark spotting. Pets scratching more than usual is worth noting too.

What to do if you spot any of these

  • Write down where you saw it, what time and how often — that detail speeds up identification.
  • Take a photo if you can, even a blurry one.
  • Clear food sources: sealed containers, no pet food left out overnight, bins closed.
  • Avoid mixing multiple supermarket sprays — it can scatter the population and make treatment harder.
  • Get it identified properly before treating, so the treatment matches the pest.
